English Learning

Calculating Budget
Beaver English Tutoring Program is a free student-centered pedagogy for a sustainable intergenerational learning program specifically for senior Chinese immigrant learners. The program is in collaboration with Professor Zhang from the University of Toronto, Sociology Department. To run the program, we have high school students from across Canada as volunteer instructors, older adults/seniors as English learners, and virtual zoom meetings which allow one-on-one tutoring sessions to be held.
Before sessions begin, each of our volunteer instructors would personalize a learning plan specifically for their learners based on the learner’s English level and ability. Then, volunteer instructors will prepare class materials and revise lesson plans throughout the sessions when necessary to maximize the learner’s ability and efficiency.

Throughout the sessions, feedback forms were sent and expectations and suggestions for future sessions were solicited from instructors and students. All participants expressed their interest to continue with the program and rated very satisfied with our volunteer instructors. From this program, senior students indicated that they had learned English sentences, grammar, reading, and communication skills.

Moving forward, we would continue to develop an age-friendly teaching pedagogy. We will work together with both older adults and young instructors to design the course materials to meet the needs of older adults, which include concepts like aging, community engagement and development, and age-friendly communities so it’s beneficial for both the students and the instructors.
